I know that I said the other day that Spring in Portland is amazing, but I am going to say it again. One thing that is great about the spring is that the winter is pretty crappy. Any non rain weather after three months of rain is an improvement. I went to the store today, and while I was walking I thought about just how wonderful Portland is.
In other news, I was talking to Bobby yesterday and he said that his new goal is to make an album as good as Neil Young's Harvest. For those of you not in the know, Harvest is a pretty amazing record, even for someone amazing like Neil Young. I think that it is admirable to set goals that high, but I feel like that might be a little overreaching. I'm pretty sure Neil Young wasn't thinking that he was going to write Harvest while he was writing it. I bet he just wanted to make music, and what came out was Harvest. Saying you want to write an album better than Harvest is like saying you want to start a religion that is more popular than Christianity. It could happen, but its not likely. I totally believe in setting goals, but I like to set goals that can be accomplished. Like one summer I set the goal for myself to learn how to juggle, and I did. It was an easy goal, but it took me all summer to accomplish it. When I had achieved this small goal I felt very accomplished. If my goal have been to become a member of the Flying Karamazov Brothers by the end of the summer I would have been disappointed. I hope that Bobby makes an album as good as Harvest, but I also hope that if he doesn't, and just makes and album that is good that he won't be upset.
Speaking of cool things. Junot Diaz won both the national book critics circle award and the pulitzer for The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. If you haven't read this book or heard of this author you should look it up. He is amazing. Here is an
interview in In These Times that he did and an
article from something called Scoop that I found on Google news.
For those of you who've never seen: Here are the Flying Karamozov Brothers.
